Scope of role
Reporting into the Head of SEO, the Technical SEO Lead is responsible for the technical SEO function of Yellowball, shaping technical strategies, ensuring best practices for data, analytics & reporting and supporting the wider team with the technical aspects of campaign delivery.
The Tech SEO Lead supports migration projects, and represents the SEO function in discussions around technical best practice for website redesigns and structuring.
The Tech SEO Lead also seeks way to improve the quality and efficiency of deliverables and processes through automation and AI. They should be familiar with a range of tools across AI and SEO and know how to leverage these for maximum impact.
What will you be doing day-to-day
- Shaping how we approach technical SEO and deliver it to our clients
- Supporting the SEO team to solve advanced technical challenges that arise with our clients
- Undertake audits on areas of technical SEO to support existing clients or as one-off projects.
- Building best-in-class Looker Studio reports
- Managing the setup and correct configuration of GA4 tracking for clients.
- Take on the voice of technical SEO for Yellowball both internally and externally
- Driving innovation through the creation of scripts, dashboards and automation
- Upskilling and inspiring the team by providing training on all aspects of technical SEO
- Review existing technical tools and test new tools that are launched in the industry
Key Responsibilities: Technical auditing & implementation
- Lead and own technical SEO audits
- Produce technical ‘backlog’ documents, outlining key technical tasks according to priority and SEO impact.
- Oversee technical implementation of SEO technical backlogs, including, but not limited to:
- Advising on website architecture, crawlability, internal linking and URL structures
- Auditing and improving page speed, Core Web Vitals and overall performance
- Troubleshooting crawling and indexing errors, including JavaScript rendering issues
- Schema implementation (structured data), including strategy, markup, testing and monitoring.
- Using plugin best-practices for CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress) and advising the wider team on plugin use, configuration and updates.
- Liaising with the development team to ensure SEO tasks (redirects, canonical tags, crawl directives, site speed optimisations) are built to specification and delivered correctly, where this cannot be completed by the Tech SEO Lead directly.
- Investigate complex technical problems on client sites (e.g., indexing drop, JS rendering issues, crawl budget waste, canonicalisation conflict), diagnosing root causes and recommending solutions.
- Manage analytics checks & setups (GA4, Google Search Console, tag management), ensuring correct tracking, data integrity and measurement of SEO outcomes.
- Lead on tech best practice for large datasets - conducting log file analysis, advising on crawling options for large scale sites and confidently driving forward how we manage large scale SEO and data manipulation.
Reporting & data analytics
- Own the SEO reporting function: lead the design, build and standardisation of reporting frameworks (e.g. using Looker Studio) to ensure SEO metrics are clearly visible, actionable and consistent across clients.
- Maintain and regularly update a best-in-class Looker Studio report template.
- Troubleshoot any reporting issues with existing Looker Studio reports
- Review complementary methods for data reporting and analysis, such as using BigQuery, ChatGPT and other automations.
- Monitor client sites for ongoing technical SEO issues (crawl logs, search console alerts, indexation, canonicalisation, redirect chains, site speed, broken links) and drive remediation.
Team Support & Cross-departmental collaboration
- Provide technical SEO support and guidance to the wider SEO team, acting as escalation point and mentor; lead monthly training sessions, share best practices and help upskill team members.
- Stay up to date with emerging search engine algorithms, technical SEO trends (e.g., Core Web Vitals, JS SEO, SGE/LLM impact, schema updates), and ensure the agency adapts accordingly.
- Work closely with the development/project management team to sign-off on migration approaches, join migration discussions early and ensure that SEO risk is mitigated during site builds or re-platforms.
- Attends quarterly business meetings with VIP client(s) and other meetings where required to support SEO team members.
Tool stack
Own the agency’s SEO tool-stack: evaluate, maintain and review tools (crawlers, log-file analysis, monitoring, APIs, custom scripts, dashboards). Recommend and pilot new tooling/automation where beneficial and cost-effective.
New Business
- Work with the Head of SEO to prepare quotes for projects including one-off migration support projects, GA4 setup projects and similar.
- Where necessary, support Head of SEO with new business requests/proposals as they relate to tech SEO, data or analytics.
AI & Innovation
- Use AI/LLMs to speed up internal processes and improve operational efficiency.
Key competencies
- YOU MUST HAVE PREVIOUS DIGITAL/SEO AGENCY EXPERIENCE
- Highly experienced in Google Analytics 4, Tag Manager and Search Console - able to correctly configure tracking setups, troubleshoot issues and resolve them efficiently and quickly.
- Full working knowledge of ScreamingFrog, and able to translate a ScreamingFrog crawl into clear, actionable insights and converse confidently on the expected benefits and uplift of different areas of technical SEO to clients and team members alike.
- Thorough knowledge and extensive reading around GEO/AI Search and how this is changing, and how strategies should be adapted to meet this emerging aspect of search.
- A proactive, problem-solving mindset: you anticipate issues and drive improvements
- Friendly and supportive attitude - leading with availability and understanding, and supporting others in their technical knowledge.
- Strong commercial mindset: able to deliver projects within scope, able to develop profitable product/service offerings to grow client lifetime value, able to spot opportunities to add value to client campaigns.
- Strong understanding of CMS platforms including Wordpress and Shopify - understanding key SEO challenges and characteristics of each platform
- Strong understanding of core technical SEO principles - able to converse confidently with clients, and guide team to the correct or most optimal solution. Examples include:
- Crawling and indexing, including how to spot and address indexation challenges of large-scale SEO sites
- International SEO experience - confident in hreflang execution, domain structuring (CCTLDs vs TLDs, subfolder vs subdomains),and best practice for multi-language sites
- Conversant in Javascript SEO and headless CMS management
- SEO research and experimentation (e.g., crawl budget testing, JS rendering, log-file vs crawl data, split testing).
- Desirable: Coding or scripting experience (Python, JavaScript, Google Sheets scripting) to automate audits or pull data via APIs. General experience working with APIs.
